About Course

This course introduces the foundations of polyvagal theory within a functional and longevity medicine framework, combining core neuroscience with practical clinical application. You will gain insight into autonomic nervous system regulation, vagus nerve function, and how nervous system states influence digestion, inflammation, hormonal balance, and treatment tolerance. The course translates theory into applied tools, helping clinicians build regulation-first strategies that improve patient outcomes.

Estimated learning time: 1–2 hours, depending on your pace.

What Will You Learn?

  • The role of the autonomic nervous system in health, disease, and longevity
  • How to recognise ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal states in clinical practice
  • How nervous system dysregulation affects digestion, immunity, sleep, metabolism, and inflammation
  • Practical polyvagal tools including breathwork, HRV training, grounding, sound, and co-regulation
  • How to sequence functional medicine interventions using a stabilise–regulate–restore–optimise framework
  • Applying a regulation-first approach to improve treatment tolerance and long-term resilience

Course Content

Module 1 – Inside the Regulated Nervous System
In this foundational module, we explore the essential principles of polyvagal theory and the central role of the vagus nerve in health, resilience, and longevity. You will be introduced to the structure of the autonomic nervous system and the concept of neuroception: the nervous system’s unconscious detection of safety or threat. We will examine how nervous system state influences metabolism, inflammation, immune modulation, hormonal balance, and tissue repair. This module establishes a critical clinical insight: before the body can optimise, regenerate, or respond to intervention, it must first feel safe.

Module 2
In this module, we translate polyvagal theory into practical clinical application. You will explore how regulated, mobilised, and shutdown states present in real patients and how these states influence digestion, sleep, hormonal balance, inflammation, and treatment tolerance. Through case-based discussion, you will learn why fasting, detoxification, cold exposure, and optimisation tools can worsen symptoms when introduced in the wrong autonomic state. This module reframes symptom interpretation through a state-based lens.

Module 3
This module introduces a comprehensive polyvagal-informed toolkit for building nervous system regulation in clinical practice. Rather than focusing on a single technique, you will learn how to combine breathwork, HRV training, orienting, grounding, sound-based regulation, movement, touch, temperature modulation, and environmental editing. You will also examine how circadian rhythm stability, blood sugar regulation, and predictable routines serve as nervous system interventions, not merely lifestyle recommendations.

Module 4
In this final module, we integrate polyvagal theory into real-world functional and longevity practice through case studies. You will analyse mobilisation, shutdown, and reactivity patterns and learn how to sequence interventions safely. This module introduces a four-stage framework: stabilise, regulate, restore, and optimise. You will see how mistimed intensity can deepen dysregulation, and how state-aware sequencing improves treatment tolerance and outcomes.
